Warren's Time Capsule Gets Dug Up After 50 Years!

A GIANT EAGLE LAID AN EGG IN WARREN IN 1976. WE’RE ABOUT TO CRACK IT OPEN.

During the 1976 Fourth of July parade, a group of Warren residents wheeled a towering eagle float down the street, swung it around, and backed its glorious tail feathers over a hole in the ground. What came out? A Sugarbush gondola stuffed with who-knows-what, lowered into the earth like the world’s most patriotic burial. No one wrote down what went inside. It’s been sitting there ever since.

Fifty years later, on May 19 (rain date May 26), the Warren Historical Society is pulling it back out. Stay tuned to FPF and the Valley Reporter for the exact time. Once the gondola surfaces, we’re hauling it to the Warren Fire Department bay, where we’ll have roughly two weeks to hose it down, sort through it, photograph everything, and figure out what survived a half century underground.

We need hands for that. If you’re the kind of person who gets excited about carefully unwrapping mysterious objects from 1976 (or hosing mud off of them), let us know in advance so we can plan shifts. We’re also hunting for creative minds to help us figure out how to share what we find with the community. We’re not interested in one big exhibit behind glass. We want to bring it to people, maybe small pop-up displays around the valley, wherever makes sense. If that kind of thing gets your wheels turning, we want to hear from you.

Come September 12, we’re sealing up a brand new capsule and putting it back in the ground for the next 50 years. When it gets opened in 2076, it’ll be America’s tricentennial. What we choose to put inside right now is what represents us to a community that doesn’t exist yet. No pressure.
The East Warren Community Market is a partner of the Warren Time Capsule Project. Drop-off details for new capsule contributions are coming soon.
